Bark Park Weekly Highlight

In the quaint town of Holland, Sue’s journey into the world of canine companionship unfolded with the arrival of Bandit, a vibrant yellow lab chosen by her son and daughter-in-law from Dan’s Kennels. Named after the Buffalo sports team, The Bandits, this lovable pup quickly found a home alongside a charming goat named Sabres in their spacious abode.
Life’s unexpected turns led Sue to take on the caretaking role for Bandit, a delightful 9-year-old with a penchant for laughter and an insatiable appetite. A former full-time employee at Cabela’s, Sue decided to embark on a new chapter a year and a half ago, retiring to savor the joys of life, love, and leisure.
Sue, a nature enthusiast drawn to the great outdoors, frequents the park with Bandit, reveling in the beauty of the changing seasons. Whether it’s a winter wonderland or a summer’s day, Sue and Bandit make their mark, showcasing the enduring bond between human and canine.
A familiar face at Canalside concerts, a seasoned hiker, and a lover of park strolls, Sue’s appreciation for the simple joys of life extends to her passion for candle-making and gardening. She holds a special disdain for negativity, emphasizing her love for dogs and her unwavering commitment to kindness.

Speaking of Bandit, Sue chuckles at his insatiable appetite, recalling moments when his love for food bordered on comedic. Even in her days working at Cabela’s, if Bandit missed breakfast, Sue made sure to satiate his hunger upon her return home, only to find him ready for lunch just 20 minutes later.
Having experienced the heartache of losing dogs in the past, Sue initially vowed against having more canine companions. However, Bandit waltzed into her life, transforming her perspective. Reflecting on the profound companionship, devotion, and joy that dogs bring, Sue now declares, “I didn’t realize I needed another dog!”
Ever eager to give back, Sue wholeheartedly volunteers for park events, celebrating the brilliance of the dog park concept. Her only wish? More benches and shaded areas to enhance the community’s experience. With a heart full of gratitude, Sue stands as a testament to the indescribable joy that comes from sharing one’s life with a loyal and loving furry friend. Thanks, Sue, for being a vibrant part of our pet-loving community!

Jaiden and Koda, a dynamic duo gracing our local park for the past month, bring a heartwarming tale to our shared pet-loving community. Currently on a break from her studies as a hopeful Marine Biologist in Charleston, South Carolina, Jaiden’s journey has taken a delightful turn toward the possibility of becoming a veterinarian.
Koda, the spirited 9-month-old German Shepherd Husky mix, entered Jaiden’s life in a serendipitous encounter at an Illinois hotel resort. An elderly couple, seeking a loving home for the pup, approached Jaiden, who, without hesitation, welcomed Koda into her world. At just 6 weeks old, Koda became Jaiden’s first dog, marking the beginning of a profoundly rewarding companionship.
Jaiden, a multifaceted individual with a myriad of hobbies including tennis, painting, art, music, and volunteering at the SPCA, finds deep fulfillment in the unconditional love shared with Koda. Reflecting on the belief that “dogs pick you,” Jaiden acknowledges the authenticity of this connection.
Despite the challenging decision to send Koda for a month of boarding and training, Jaiden’s heartache transformed into joy upon their reunion. Koda, now a certified service dog, embodies the resilience and loyalty that defines their bond.
As the oldest among her siblings, two brothers, and a sister, Jaiden’s family expands to include two feline companions. Departing for college, Jaiden, a devoted Buffalo Bills fan, embarked on a journey back with her mom, taking a pause at a local bar or restaurant to catch the Buffalo Bills facing off against the Miami Dolphins.
Anticipating her return in the summer, Jaiden looks forward to volunteering for dog park events, adding another layer to the tapestry of her heartwarming connection with Koda and the broader pet-loving community. Their story is a testament to the profound impact that pets can have on our lives, weaving love and joy into the fabric of our everyday adventures.

Get ready for an enchanting canine tale as we delve into the world of Mark, a captivating conversationalist with two canine companions stealing the spotlight – Chloe and Lucy. Chloe, a loyal golden companion of 15 years, holds a special place in Mark’s heart. Their story began when a basketball-playing girl Mark coached mentioned a litter of puppies in need of a home. Mark, quick to seize the opportunity, took a video of Chloe and, come Christmas morning, played the heartwarming clip for his family, offering them a chance to welcome Chloe into their lives. It was a unanimous decision, and Chloe became a cherished family member in January.
The second member of this dynamic duo is Lucy, an Australian Cattle/Shepard mix, approaching her fourth birthday in April. Lucy’s journey includes a rescue tale during the challenging times of COVID. A Seven Hearts Maternity Rescue from West Virginia, she was originally named Daisy but found her forever home with Mark, who renamed her Lucy, inspired by his love for “I Love Lucy.” What makes their bond even more delightful is the mentorship Chloe provides to the younger Lucy – a heartwarming example of canine camaraderie.
Mark, retired from his high school Physical Education teaching position in Perry, NY, is happily married for 27 years with a 26-year-old daughter and a 23-year-old son. His adventures with his canine companions have taken them through 38 states, all documented with a tent by their side. Finding solace in nature, Mark enjoys peaceful hikes, fog-watching by the lake in the early mornings, and the soothing sounds of loons.
An active participant in his faith and a pickleball enthusiast, Mark radiates trust and appreciation for his furry friends. He’s never encountered a problem at the dog park, embracing the joy of canine companionship. Mark’s commitment extends beyond his own fur babies, as he generously offers to lend a helping hand in Lancaster Unleashed functions. Cheers to Mark, a true friend to our four-legged community!

Brittany cherishes her 1 year old mutt (14 different breeds!) Ollie! Brittany had lost 3 pets, one from cancer and 2 from old age. After allowing herself time to grieve she decided it was time for a puppy. She saw Ollie’s profile picture. He looked playful and loving. First meet and greet it was love at first sight! Ollie knocked her over, licking and slurping her all over! Ollie’s history read he came from Texas. Mom was pregnant with 10 puppies when she was found. Mom also had porcupine quilles in her face and an eye infection. She was destined to be euthanized. Nickle City Rescue stepped in and brought her to Buffalo. Four of the puppies died. Mom was adopted and is living a good life now. Strangely enough Ollie was the last puppy left. Foster mom repeatedly said, “Ollie was waiting for Brittany!”. Ollie visits the dog park at least once a week but weather depending up to 3 times a week. Ollie had a fear of car rides but coming to the park has helped to conquer that fear. Ollie understands “go to the park?”. Brittany works at Aspire doing PT with individuals with intellectual disabilities. Her husband Greg is an Academic Advisor at Bryant and Stratton College. They met through work. Greg moved from NYC 10 years ago because of his love for Brittany. Brittany enjoys kayaking, hiking and baking custom cookies. As we were talking I stopped as I was listening to a bird and apologized to Brittany stating I was wondering what kind of bird that was. She immediately came back with the name of the bird species. Being stunned I looked at her. She smiled and shared she loves bird watching and she used to work at a local nature preserve! She wants people to know she truly enjoys helping others through physical therapy to relive their pain! She would love to see agility equipment in the park and is open to volunteer for events! Thanks Brittany!
